JCB Golf and Country Club

As and aside: In general, can the JCB trips please be restricted to the blog on the Dawn Patrol golf website and NOT distributed on any other social media platform – many thanks Terry Bishop

Latest JCB trip 21st May 2024

Unfortunately, Tom Roberton had to withdraw from our latest JCB trip, and there were no takers from the DP group. However, Jordan Gullis, who happened to overhear the plans, eagerly filled the spot.

Our usual format worked like clockwork once again: an early start to beat the traffic, followed by a tour of the VIP visitor center for coffee and a quick overview of the JCB story. Breakfast at the JCB golf club has become a staple of our trips.

This time, buggies were permitted on the fairways, significantly enhancing the overall experience.

A “quick putt” on the practice green 10.5 Stimp, then off for a photo opportunity on the first tee, with the message from the staff ringing in my ears that they were building the speed up so the greens would be circa 15 for the Liv competition.

Roy Box, a friend of mine from Chipping Sodbury golf club paired with Jordon and Alex paired with Arthur.

They played a match that was won by Roy & Jordan, I am sure Jordan will be pleased to go into more detail, but I understand he parred a number of holes and had a couple of birdies, he is keen to see how the pros play the holes he got birdies on when he visits for the Liv.

In our match Brian & Mick played Guy and your correspondent in a tough battle which ended with a draw, Brian and Mick were one up after the 17th. Despite my advice to Brian & Mick to play the 18th as 2 fairways and forget about trying to use what looks like the easiest route to green Brain & Mick fell into the trap

Guy played to top Fairway well getting on to the green with ease and wining the hole.

Well done Alex getting a Par on the 16th 355 Yard par 4 – over some very difficult terrain, the grandstand was being erected for Liv so I think he was just playing to the imaginary crowd.

Guy then went through the cards and a ghost draw was made which was won by Alex & Brian with 52 points, Mick & Roy 2nd with 45.

Now for the news you have all been waiting for, there were no Pars on the 17th So, the record of 3 pars and 1 bogey from a 4 ball still stands. No excuses this time as the tee was on the lower-level tee.

No Official photographer this time so a limited number of photos on the day.

Woodbury Park Golf & Country Club

Paul Steer lead a group of 12 players to Woodbury Park Golf and Country Club last week. Unfortunately, the course was very wet, but well worth a visit later in the summer.

The overall 3-day winner was Darren Buss taking away the Bloodblister Trophy.

The winner of the nearest the pin on the 18th was Gary Gale-Sides winning a bottle of wine.

The winner of the most blobs was Dave New winning a bottle of wine.

A special thanks to Paul Steer for organising another enjoyable 3-day trip with good friends, great banter and of course enjoyable golf.

Winter League

I attended the Handicap and Competition committee meeting on Tuesday where the poor entry for the Winter Leage was discussed. I offered to canvas the Dawn Patrol to see if there were any specific reasons for this.

Obviously with the intent to improve on the way it is run, or the format, or the points scored etc.

Apparently, there were some rumours that the Wednesday and Saturday competitions were combined as a single competition. This is not true in that they are two separate comps with a final arranged between the two winners.

Anyway – any thoughts or comments will be helpful. Send them Rod Bird on IG or email.
